Fly the Fortress! April 2 – 4, KDVT Deer Valley, AZ

Once again the EAA B-17 Aluminum Overcast is on display at Deer Valley AirPort KDVT, April 2-4 2010. Thanks go out to the good people at Cutter Aviation Deer Valley. I called the Desk and asked if I could get out on the ramp early to get some shots with no people in the frame. The friendly Profesionals at Cutter made every effort to accommadate me. I thank you again. EAA is offering historic flight experiences in its beautifully restored B-17G Flying Fortress “Aluminum Overcast.” This aircraft is an example of the American heavy bomber that helped turn the tide of battle in World War II. Fly a mission back in time and feel the might of this magnificent aircraft, just as those brave young men did more than 50 years ago. Read more »

Soviet Yakolev Yak-11 “Maniyak” Reno Racer – N18AW

One of the highlights of the recent MCAS Yuma  air show, was the chance to meet Bill and Julie Lewallen. Bill and his wife brought out this beautiful YAK 11 named "MANIYAK" to Yuma. The aircraft is based out of Pinal County, AZ. Both Bill and his wife are super nice people and very receptive to our requests to get all the great shots we needed.  Bill explained this aircraft was a single seat and was converted to dual control a few years ago. The aircraft is a 10 +++ plus in terms of quality of restoration to a racer. The cockpit is roomy and very comfortable, with a very modern feel.  The aircraft has been test flown to 450mph, making it a true unlimited contender.  We hope to photograph this aircraft again at it‘s home base in AZ, and conduct a full interview with Bill about the history of this wonderful aircraft. The Yak-11 design was based in large part on the successful Yak-3 fighter, and became the Soviet Air Force's most widely used trainer aircraft. It has sometimes been equated in importance with the T-6 Texan. Powerplant: Shvetsov ASh-21 air-cooled radial piston engine, 521 kW (700 hp) More Pictures

1942 Ryan Aeronautical PT-22 RECRUIT – N56017

I had the pleasure of meeeting the aircraft owner, Danny Don of Chandler ,AZ . Danny brings this aircraft to events in the southwest. One event you can find him at  the Coolage airport fly in held  on the first Saturday of each month (except during the summer months). Hey it's AZ. Primary trainers represented the first of three stages of military flight training -- primary, basic and advanced. Prior to 1939, the Air Corps relied entirely on biplanes as primary trainers, but in 1940 it ordered a small number of Ryan civilian trainers and designated them as PT-16s. They were so successful that the Air Corps then ordered large numbers of improved versions, among them the PT-22. By the time production was completed in 1942, the Air Corps accepted 1,023 PT-22s. In 1942 the U.S. Army Air Forces took 25 additional trainers, originally ordered for the Netherlands.
